Health Benefits of Gardening

Now that Spring is finally here and the weather’s warming up, many people will begin their seasonal yard work regimen, i.e. cutting the grass, pulling weeds, and planting a garden, just to name a few.  Recent studies show that there are many health benefits to gardening, beyond the obvious benefits of fresh air and exercise.

Gardening can increase your satisfaction with life.  The sight of beautiful flowers, colorful veggies, and the wildlife that co-insides will trigger the release of mood-enhancing chemicals in the brain, and it is also an anti-depressant.  Gardening also has been proven to help with sleep deprivation.

Also, gardening will lower risk for both osteoporosis and diabetes.  The activities of gardening such as lifting, digging, carrying, etc. are all weight bearing activities that can prevent osteoporosis.  The amount of exercise is enough to reduce risk of diabetes.  Also, having fresh, healthy produce readily available in your homegrown garden will promote healthy eating habits.
