Diabetes and Amputation

Diabetic foot complications are the leading cause of lower limb amputation in the country, according to the National Institute of Health.  Diabetes can cause nerve damage to the feet and reduce blood flow, which can cause minor cuts and scratches on the feet to turn into open and sometimes infected ulcers, which can cause gangrene.  This is what leads to amputation.

It is very important for a person with diabetes to take care of their feet.  Things you can to do prevent complications are: wash and inspect feet daily, wear dry, clean socks, carefully trim toenails or have a physician trim them, don’t smoke, wear diabetic shoes/inserts, and keep up with physician check-ups to assure there are no problems.

If you are a diabetic and a doctor prescribes you diabetic shoes and inserts, we can provide them here and most are covered by insurance. A prescription is required.  For more information, check out our products and services or call one of our offices.
